Back in 2001 I worked on a project called “Shared Banking Services” (or “Last Bank in the Community” as it was originally known).

Basically, the “Big 4” banks each nominated two branches in locations where they were the last bank in the town.

The objective was that customers of the other 3 could use the host bank’s counter. Services included cash & cheque deposits, cash withdrawals, bill-payments and note & coin exchange.

The BBA (British Bankers Association) co-ordinated the project between the banks. We nominated branches in Epworth, Lincolnshire and Cerrigydrudion, North Wales.

There was a modest uptake in the scheme and ultimately it was decided not to continue.

Fast forward 20 years and see that Shared Banking Hubs are to be extended.
