Appreciating the service of David Bates

Writer's picture: Martin RidleyMartin Ridley

50 years ago today, I walked into 245 Ealing Road, Alperton branch to start my very first full time employment.

I’d left home in Scarborough for the first time, on the 14:25 train to York, where I changed to an intercity to Kings Cross.

It was very daunting as an 18 year old to take this bold step, but I am pleased that I learned to stand on my own two feet so early in life.

The Bank put me up in the Marlborough Hotel in St Johns Wood for two weeks, to allow me time to find somewhere to live.
