Roger Smith

Roger Smith R.I.P - 7 May 2022

MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED BY BOB KNOX

I have been advised by Margaret Smith that my good friend Roger Smith suddenly collapsed and died on Saturday evening. He was on board his canal boat moored in Northampton.

He had had a good day and enjoyed a BBQ at the canal basin with some friends before boarding the boat which he bought when he retired as the branch manager of Regent Street some 20 years ago.

He and I had worked together in the 1970s and 1980s at Maidstone RHO first as BSAs/ACAs and then as Controllers. From there he went to Crawley Area Office.

In the 1970s he introduced me to Round Table and both of us remained in both RT and 41 club for evermore. He was also a Rotarian and raised substantial money for Guide Dogs for the blind. He and Margaret have continued to live in the Maidstone area. Sadly I had not seen him since 2019 pre covid.

A great person and loyal friend who will be sadly missed by everyone.

RIP.

ADDITIONAL MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED BY BOB KNOX ON 15 JUNE 2022

Today I have attended Roger Smiths Memorial service in Maidstone.

There were some 200 people in attendance including Tony Fuller, David Mills, Bob Wyatt and other bank people.

It was a moving tribute to a remarkable and generous man.

20 JANUARY 2022

KINDLY SHARED BY DEREK KAVANAGH

It is with the deepest of regrets to inform you all of the passing of my great friend and fantastic work colleague.

Marilyn Hooker, sadly passed away yesterday evening after a short but courageous battle. She did not want sympathy during her illness. Her positivity in dealing with her diagnosis was inspirational and amazing. She told me to tell everyone not to cry or to be upset. She was always thinking of the people she was leaving behind especially her husband Martin and her mum Grace.

Marilyn's career began with Midland Bank Overseas, in the Cash Department and she progressed to become a highly respected and knowledgeable manager ending her career in the International Cheque Clearing Department for retirement.

Marilyn's funeral service details will be available soon.

May I please ask interested parties to liaise through me after Monday and to allow Martin and the family time to grieve.

Thank you.

Mick Hinton

12 FEBRUARY 2021

KINDLY SHARED BY LYN DALY

I have some very sad news to share regarding one of our colleagues Mick Hinton.

Here is the post from his son.

I’m sorry to have to tell you all that my Dad - Mick Hinton sadly passed away on Friday 12th February.

As you can no doubt imagine, it has been an incredibly difficult time for all of us close to him. Dad had an
incredible life, travelling the world, making friends wherever he went and, in normal circumstances, I know
people would’ve come from all over to celebrate his life.

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, we are unable to give him the send off that we would like so have decided to make his funeral available online for those of you who can’t be with us on the day. In typical Mick fashion, he has actually written his own Eulogy!

If you’d like to hear his words and celebrate his life then the link is below.

The funeral will be taking place at 10:30am on Thursday 25th February.

Link: https://www.obitus.com/ Username: Cako4007 Password: 563943

Should you wish to send flowers then please get in touch with Barton Bouquets - 01803-313443

Alternatively we have nominated the Dogs Trust as our chosen charity should anybody like to
make a donation.

My Dad was a supporter of the charity and had adopted a dog named Basil!

You can donate online at https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/donation/

Thank you to everybody that has been in touch with their condolences.

RIP Dad

Sylvia James (nee Townsend)

3 DECEMBER 2020

KINDLY SHARED BY GILL HUBBARD (WAS PATERSON, NEE TOWNSEND)

My sister, Sylvia James, nee Townsend, sadly passed away on 3rd December, aged just 66.

She worked mainly at Southport Branch, in the 70's and 80's. She also did a stint, along with myself, on
London relief and at Southend when Access cards were first introduced.

She began to show signs of dementia in her early fifties and eventually had to be moved into a care home.
In November she had a seizure and fell on her face, so had to be taken to hospital for treatment, before
returning to the care home after a few days. She then started to have breathing problems so was taken back to hospital where she tested positive for Covid, and also contracted sepsis.

Unfortunately her body was too weak to fight all this and she passed away with her daughter by her side,

Sad news today Peter Holmes died this morning. Peter fought in WW2 as a Spitfire Pilot and then spent many years in Threadneedle Street branch.

He was almost 95 and had regularly attended Rugby Club lunches at New Beckenham until a couple of years ago when ill health took hold.

A wonderful gentleman and one of those gallant people who we owe so much too.

MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED KAREN SUCH

Hi all.

I’m wondering if anyone knew and worked with Paul Grainger who sadly passed away a couple of years ago.

I worked with him in Leamington Spa 402706 in the mid 80’s when he was the accountant in the branch and I believe he worked mainly in the Warwickshire and Gloucestershire area.

Although we kept in touch via Christmas cards I didn’t get to meet up with him before he passed away.

I am in touch with his widow Theresa and it’s on her behalf I ask for any info of where he may have worked.

We are trying to fit together a timeline of where he worked as they got together later in his career and they didn’t discuss his early days with the bank.

It’s something she would love to know about.

Thank you for your time and hopefully any snippets of information will be gratefully appreciated by Theresa.

Thank you Martin!

Martin, I’m not sure how you share the news of bereavements in the Midland / Horizons site but sadly, Mike Fenton died last night after a private battle with cancer.

MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED BY BEVERLEY HORLER

I just wanted to add my own personal condolences on the untimely and sad passing of our wonderful friend and colleague Mike Fenton, and to also let you all know that Grace (Mike's mum), Mandy, Alex and Sam are extremely grateful for your wonderful comments and memories which are helping them through this extremely painful time.

Mike had been unwell over the last 11 months, however his fighting spirit and positive attitude shone through.

He remained a fighter until the end, something that many of us recognise in his working spirit with his resilience for any challenge that was thrown at him.

From the day I opened the door of Pontypridd branch of Midland Bank in 1979 to Mike, we became firm friends and whilst our careers sometimes took different directions our paths often crossed throughout all those years.

As we know in addition to the Rhondda valleys, Mike worked in the Cardiff and Newport Area with many of us and also across in Swansea at the CSC as well as his latter career in Training and Learning &
Development which took him all over the Country.

He touched many of us throughout those years, and I know also that a number of you also worked with Mandy his wonderful wife (my husband Steve worked with her for 20+ years).

Mike moved on with his Training career outside the bank and then worked for Principality Building Society which was one of our welsh firm favourite competitors!

I have no doubt that his colleagues there will have wonderful memories of him too.

As all your comments recognise Mike was a 'true gentleman" and a wonderful ambassador for Midland Bank and HSBC............ he truly was one of a kind.

His fun, laughter and musical ability was coupled with his positive attitude, resilience and outstanding leadership quality which touched soo many.

Whilst he committed so much to his working life which we are all eternally grateful for, his power, strength and great love was his wonderful, precious family who he was soo proud of........ Grace, Mandy, Alex and Sam.

Alex and Sam your dad was a wonderful man, taken far too early, but I know he will have inspired you both to continue to achieve great things in your lives and make him proud.

He was a devoted husband, father and son.

It is so, so sad when someone is taken so young but we will not forget him.

RIP wonderful man

Michael (Mick) William Sowman passed away peacefully at home on 12th September 2016 surrounded by his family.

Spotted this in local paper obituaries. Those who worked at Hinckley (402419) in the early 70s may remember Mick.

Spent most of his time like I did at Barwell branch once it became a sub branch. Also at the other subs Burbage and Sapcote.

I vaguely remember Barwell was open 5 days a week. Good place to work and being former branch it was big with 4 tills and with only 2 sub office clerks we seemed lost in it.

Sadly all the subs have since closed.

I seem to recall Mick left the bank on the early 70s and joined Forward Trust, at the time a subsidiary.

4 JUNE 2019

MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED BY GWILYM PRITCHARD.

My school friend and colleague Gwilym Reees Parry died on 4 June.

Gwilym started at Caernarfon Branch just a 15 minute bus ride from home where he lived all of his life.

He spent most of his time on North Wales Relief Staff, finishing his career at Bangor.

Gwilym was a bus driver and he was featured on TV, one clip was teaching Gareth his Manager at Bangor how to drive and another they were taking people on a touring holiday.

"Iach wyt o bob afiechyd, ac yn dy fedd gwyn dy fyd". "You are healthy of every disease and blessed in your grave".

It sounds much better in Welsh.

Geoff Turner

8 MARCH 2018

MESSAGE KINDLY SHARED BY GEOFF TURNER

Some sad news for those of us who worked in the North Staffordshire area in the 1970's and 80's with the passing of Geoff Turner on 8th March.

Geoff started his career in Midland Bank at Hanley branch in 1974 which is where I first met him and he moved around various local branches before ending as Manager at Longton. Geoff was one of life's characters, he occasionally had his grumpy moments but beneath it was a great sense of humour.

After leaving the Bank, he and his wife Hilary opened a Belgian-style bar in their home town of Leek in Staffordshire in 1995.

Such bars were virtually unknown in this country at the time so it was a brave move, but one which proved to be extremely successful, and which they were still operating until his sudden death from a heart attack.

He would have been 65 in August and sadly his plans for a well-earned retirement will not now happen.

The funeral is this Wednesday 4th March, 1.45 pm at St. Anne's Church, Brown Edge.
