Appreciating the service of Niall Hossack

Updated: Apr 23, 2022

RETIREMENT

After 42 years service at Midland Bank/HSBC, I’ve decided to take the next journey in life and retire.

I’ve only worked for the one organisation since leaving school and with my brother and father also providing 42 years and 25 years of service respectfully, the Hossack family have devoted a total of 109 years of our working lives to Midland/HSBC.

In 1980, after A levels, I started as a fresh faced teenager in International Division and joined Inland Payments (1980-82) moving onto Export Finance (1982-85), then Loans Admin (1985-92) where we had to process all the third world debt of Crocker Bank (not Midland’s finest moment). From International Division, I then moved to Cards in 1992, working in Fraud for a brief spell, and then managed the gold card and business card operational teams (1992-94).

1994 was a pivotal point in my career. I was asked to develop/launch the corporate card and purchasing card products for Midland Bank as they entered the UK market. As the products grew in popularity, I really enjoyed being part of the cards/travel/procurement industry and worked with some great people at the bank, customers, and the schemes. I used to always tell those joining the team that once in corporate cards, always in corporate cards!

The products have seen some great developments over the years including lodge cards, on line MI (from paper based/desktop), chip and pin, virtual cards, fuel cards and contactless. Most recently, the introduction of PSD2 SCA has certainly provided a number of challenges for both the travel industry and the card products.

Having led/influenced/contributed to the products’ success over the last 28 years, it’s comforting to know that I leave the corporate card suite of products at HSBC in good hands as they continue their transition into digital payment products. Although the products have been in the UK for a long time, there is still so much more they can deliver to customers.

I wish all my colleagues/customers/industry peers that I have worked/engaged with the very best of luck for the future. I’m privileged to have been part of the corporate cards industry and the Midland/HSBC firm for such a long time.

Take care.
